Abstract

Background: Macula is responsible for most of our central vision and normal macular thickness can be change by disease like diabetes that can leads to severe consequences like macular edema, maculopathy and neuronal cell death and result as progressive loss of vision.

Objective: To evaluate the changes in macular thickness of patients suffering from diabetes.

Methodology: This was a cross-sectional study. A total of 178 eyes (89 patients) of diabetes mellitus with a duration of minimum 5 years were included. Patients with Cataract or previous history of cataract, Glaucoma, patient with any other ocular pathology and the patient undergoes laser treatment were excluded from the study. Afterbaseline examination, their funds were evaluated by slit lamp biomicroscope. And all the individual macular thickness assessed by OCT to evaluate the macular thickness changes occurred due to DM.

Results: The study recruited 89 patients between the ages of 40 and 60 years. Among the subjects 42 (47.2%) were male and 47(52.8%) were female. The result of this study showed that mean central macular thickness of right eye was (264.57±66.61) and left eye was (243.90±44.88) and perifoveal region of macula in diabetic patient came out to increases than the mean macular thickness of the healthy cases.

Conclusion: This study showed that CMT is higher in diabetic patients than the control cases. Peripheral macular changes also occurred in diabetic patient t. This shows that the difference was statistically significant. This study also showed that gender and age difference was not statistically significant.
