Biobanking has emerged as a critical component of modern healthcare and research infrastructure, enabling the systematic collection, storage, and management of high-quality human biospecimens linked with clinical, demographic, genomic, and other health-related data. Such resources support biomarker discovery, disease-mechanism research, therapeutic development, precision medicine, population health research, and preparedness for emerging health threats. For Pakistan, where gaps remain in longitudinal health data, representative biospecimens, standardized research infrastructure, and translation of research into clinical practice, biobanking offers an important opportunity to strengthen the national research ecosystem. Strategically developed and ethically governed biobanks can facilitate multicenter research, generate population-specific evidence, support locally relevant innovation, and improve understanding of the country’s disease burden. The establishment of the Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute and Research Center (PKLI&RC) Biobank represents an important institutional step toward integrating clinical care with research, innovation, and medical education. Through the linkage of biospecimens with clinical information and collaboration with established international initiatives, including Qatar Biobank, PKLI&RC aims to promote knowledge exchange and capacity building in biobanking. With robust governance, standardized quality systems, and sustained institutional support, the PKLI&RC Biobank has the potential to serve as a national research resource and contribute to the development of precision and evidence-based healthcare in Pakistan.
